New Year, New Faces, Same Responsibility

The 2025–26 school year began on August 27 with a different atmosphere across the district. Families noticed a positive energy as students returned to classrooms. This year also brings significant changes in leadership: a new superintendent, a new director of technology, a new director of public information and community relations, and others taking on key roles.

Leadership transitions are always important moments. They open the door to fresh ideas, different approaches, and opportunities to improve how a district operates. With a newly configured board of education, there is also hope that this year’s discussions can focus more on collaboration and less on the “business as usual” mindset that has shaped decision-making for decades.

But it’s important to remember that a change in personnel doesn’t automatically erase long-standing practices. Culture and process often move more slowly than titles and office nameplates. That’s why parent involvement remains essential.

Why Parent Involvement Still Matters

  • Accountability: New leaders need the community’s perspective to guide decisions and stay aligned with family priorities.
  • Transparency: Information should be shared clearly and consistently, and parents should expect open lines of communication.
  • Participation: Whether it’s attending board meetings, reviewing district policies, or joining committees, engagement helps ensure a balanced, responsive system.

A Parent Approach for 2025–26

  1. Attend at least one board meeting early in the year to see how new leadership sets its tone.
  2. Review district policy documents — they outline the rights and responsibilities that affect every student.
  3. Stay active in conversations about curriculum, budgeting, and student life. Change is healthiest when it grows with community input.

The first days of school have felt promising. It’s a credit to both the board and the administrators stepping into their roles. At the same time, lasting improvement requires steady attention from the people these schools serve, parents and guardians.

New leadership brings new opportunities. Parent vigilance ensures those opportunities are realized.

Here’s to wishing all teachers, administrators, and members of the board of education a successful school year.
